Marcus Miller European Tour 2023
Marcus Miller, a man-institution – multi-instrumentalist, composer (including film music), arranger, leader of his own formations, the most desirable session musician of leading jazz, fusion and pop stars, vocalist, songwriter and finally an efficient producer, well sensing new trends.
Miller’s name is immediately associated with the bass guitar. And rightly so, because he is the greatest virtuoso of this instrument since Jaco Patorius. It is worth remembering, however, that Miller is a classically educated… Clarinetist (he plays mainly the bass clarinet), only later mastered the keyboards, soprano saxophone and bass – he copes with each of these instruments perfectly.
The second association – Davis’ musical partner and co-creator of many of his successes in the 80s. The period with Miles was perhaps the most important chapter in Miller’s career. He played with him on the albums The Man with the Horn (the trumpeter’s first album released after his “health leave”), We Want Miles, Star People, Tutu, Siesta, Amandla. The closest to Polish fans is Tutu (1986), on which “our man” played Michał Urbaniak – his solo electrifies to this day. For Miller it was also a breakthrough album, from that moment he began to play the role of court composer in Davis’ band, as Shorter had in the Second Grand Quintet. On Tutu , he wrote and arranged most of the songs, as well as controlling the entire production. He did not hesitate to use the latest technology (samplers, drum machines, effects, modeling and sound recording devices), creating a pattern of sound and studio work that was widely imitated in the 80s. and later. His contribution to this project was so huge that malicious people claimed that Miles was not a leader, but only… sideman on his own album. Miller was also emotionally connected with the material of this album – in 2010 he produced its live version, Tutu Revisited, with Christian Scott on trumpet.
From the beginning he focused on music, electric music and lighter genres, today his style is a perfectly balanced combination of jazz, funk, fusion, soul and R&B.
Apparently, Miller likes to come to Polish, but strangely enough, he always avoided Krakow. And finally he came to us. The electric bass giant and his band will play at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre on July 17, funk-jazz fans get ready for a big event.
