Michel Camilo

An excellent, temperamental pianist and composer from the Dominican Republic, winner of Grammy, Emmy and Latin Emmy awards.

He developed his jazz skills based on classical and Latin music and the achievements of outstanding pianists – Garner, Silver, Hancock, Jarrett, and especially Chick Corea, whose echoes can be heard well in his music to this day. Camilo, like few others, can combine different varieties of jazz with Afro-Cuban music, its expression, fiery rhythms, dance character and spontaneity. He uses this skill not only in his own recordings, but also during cooperation with artists from his cultural circle, m.in. Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Mongo Santamaria, Arturo Sandoval. He was also invited to his bands by: Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Lovano, the Brecker brothers and many other outstanding musicians.

Camilo has incredible piano skills. This is the result of talent, but also solid studies at the Santo Domingo Conservatory and New York’s Juilliard School of Music. He has the powerful sound and technique of a classical virtuoso, enabling him to perform the most breakneck runs and dense textures. He often introduces, like McCoy Tyner in the past, ostinato figures in his left hand, which create a solid ground for crazy improvisations. He uses fast, sometimes dizzying tempos, varied articulation and harmony – from simple major-minor chords, through constructions based on quarts and fifths to multi-storey blocks with numerous alterations on the border of tonality; He likes to decorate the final moments with glissand and clusters. Although Camilo’s element is rhythm and expression, he can also play the role of a subtle lyricist, skillfully operating dynamics, space and color.
