Tomasz Chyła Quintet
Tomasz Chyła Quintet is one of the most intriguing and uncompromising bands of the young generation of Polish jazz. For several years, they have been boldly exploring improvised music, drawing inspiration from a wide range of genres – from jazz and rock to avant-garde. Their work escapes the rigid framework of styles, and the band’s ambition is to redefine the concept of jazz rock, combining it with progressive riffs and a sharp, electrifying sound. Their energetic and unpredictable style often evokes associations with the legendary King Crimson or the experimental sound of Black MIDI.
The band has released five albums: Eternal Entropy (2017), Circlesongs (2018), Live at Polish Radio 3 (2019), da Vinci (2021) and the latest – Music We Like To Dance To ( 2024). The latter is an invitation to movement – without unnecessary theorizing and intellectual analysis. It’s the musical honesty and pulsating energy that allows the listener to find exactly what they need in the moment. Prog-rock riffs interspersed with beautiful melodies remind us of the original function of music – to connect people and move their bodies. Listening to this album, you can feel like at a great party, where dancing comes completely naturally.
The album Music We Like To Dance To was enthusiastically received by critics and audiences. In February 2024, he was nominated for the FRYDERYK 2024 award, and Tomasz Chyła was nominated in the Artist of the Year category. The album was also recognized as the Album of the Year 2023 in the prestigious Jazz Top 2023 poll of the Jazz Forum magazine.
The ensemble has also performed at many prestigious festivals around the world, m.in. at the Taipei Jazz Festival, Pol’and’Rock Festival (formerly Przystanek Woodstock) and the legendary Jazz Jamboree – strengthening its position as a phenomenal and rebellious concert band.
